Chapter 1

She sat on her bed, holding a pillow close to her body. Her thoughts consumed her mind. The radio played softly in the background, the soothing music circling the room calming her slightly. The song ended and another started. This one was a familiar tune…

Some say love, it is a river; that drowns the tender reed…

Some say love, it is a razor; that leads the soul to bleed…

Some say love, it is a hunger; an endless ,aching need…

I say love, it is a flower; and you its only seed…

Her eyes closed and images of him crossed her mind. Her heart ached as the words touched her ears. She loved him, she was sure of it. They had been through so much. He had been patient with her, kind to her, and even after leaving him to die in the frozen tundra of Antarctica, he came back. He came back, after all that, he came back. Isn't that what she had always wanted? For him to come back and take her in his arms and hold her forever? Yes, it was. The time being separated from his smile, his persona, his warmth, his touch, was much too long and was agonizing. She wanted to be with him. Then why was her heart so reluctant to go back to him?

He sat quietly next to the window in his room, looking out at the evening sky. However, if one looked at his eyes, the usual gleam would be replaced by a hazed look as if he were trapped in his thoughts. The radio played soothingly in the background.

Some say love, it is a river; that drowns the tender reed…

Some say love, it is a razor; that leads the soul to bleed…

Some say love, it is a hunger; an endless ,aching need…

I say love, it is a flower; and you its only seed…

His mind shifted to thoughts of her. He could see her clearly, her auburn hair, accented with the streak of white, draping the delicate frame of her beautiful face, her green eyes like two windows into her heart and soul. She was beautiful and he loved her. She was what kept him going through the long days and lonely nights. He could never hate her, not even after she abandoned him. He wanted to hold her close to him and never let go. Then why was his heart so hesitant?

She pulled the pillow closer to her body as the song continued. The thoughts of him kept swirling in her mind.

It's the heart, afraid of breaking, that never learns to dance;

It's the dream, afraid of waking, that never takes a chance;

It's the one who won't be taken, who cannot seem to give;

And the soul, afraid of dying, that never learns to live;

Thoughts of the turmoil in their relationship ran through her mind. It had sure been a long and rough ride, but she wouldn't have had it any other way. Sure, they had their moments, but every couple went through those rough times. She was going to have to learn to put aside the past and accept him for all that he embodies. He wouldn't betray her, he wouldn't do anything to harm her. Oh God how much her heart ached to tell him how much she needed him, how much she wanted him, how much she loved him. Then what was it that kept her in her room?

He walked from the window to the bathroom and washed his face. He looked in the mirror as the song echoed in his ears.

It's the heart, afraid of breaking, that never learns to dance;

It's the dream, afraid of waking, that never takes a chance;

It's the one who won't be taken, who cannot seem to give;

And the soul, afraid of dying, that never learns to live;

Thoughts of her still flowed through his mind. God how he loved her and wanted to be with her, but the fear of rejection still lingered deep inside his heart. They hadn't said a word to each other since he had returned, just the casual exchange of glances and glares. The tension was getting to be too much to bear. He wanted to talk to her, to look in her eyes and tell her how much he needed her, how much he loved her. She was his everything. Then why was he holding back?

She rolled over in her bed trying to block out the thoughts and memories, but they remained. She curled herself up into a ball while the song continued in the background.

When the night has been too lonely, and the road has been too long;

And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong,

Just remember, in the winter, far beneath the bitter snows,

Lies a seed, that with the sun's love, in the spring, becomes the rose.

The night had definitely been too lonely and the road seemed to never end. She tossed and turned while the words echoed through her mind. Then she realized, that it was her own self that was holding her back. Why was she tormenting herself so much? Was she still feeling guilty for leaving him there? Was she too afraid of rejection? Those were chances that she would just have to take. She couldn't lie there any longer. She had to see him and tell him what was kept hidden deep inside her heart. She got up and went out the door and down towards his room.

He left his reflection and went back to the window, shuffling a deck of cards. The song surrounded his thoughts as he looked out to the stars.

When the night has been too lonely, and the road has been too long;

And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong,

Just remember, in the winter, far beneath the bitter snows,

Lies a seed, that with the sun's love, in the spring, becomes the rose.

He too felt the bitterness of a lonely night and the exhaustion from a road long traveled. He wanted to put an end to the silence, the bitterness, the loneliness. He wasn't expecting instant forgiveness from her, but she already had his. He wanted to be with her and he was willing to risk rejection just to hear the sound of her voice. Suddenly his heart began to beat faster and guided him to the door. He opened it and walked out into the hall and headed towards her room.

She stopped as she saw him heading down the hall.

He paused as he saw her figure in the shadows.

They headed towards each other slowly and stopped when they were a foot away from each other.

She looked into his eyes.

He looked into hers.

No words need to be spoken. Their eyes said it all. All the passion and love that welled in each of their souls came through and locked them in this intense gaze.

He raised a hand a slowly brushed the hair from her face and gently caressed her cheek.

"I've missed ya' chere."

The warmth from his touch sent a wave of emotions through her body awaking her passion for him. A tear formed in her eye as she lifted her hand to touch his cheek.

"Ah'm so sorry Remy. Ah shouldn't of…"

He held a finger to her lips to silence her. He pulled her in close to his body. The warmth from her soothed his heartache.

"I love you chere. Ain' notin' dat'll change dat."

She wrapped her arms around him and held him tightly. She leaned her head against his chest, listening to his heartbeat. Her heart felt at ease and safe in his arms. She didn't want to let go.

"Ah love ya' too Remy."

The two stood there, intertwined in each other's arms, there love blossoming out from the coldness, the bitterness, and the loneliness. The moon bathed them in her light providing a glow that only lovers would be capable of emitting. Nothing could disturb them now. They were in a world of their own.

When the night has been too lonely, and the road has been too long;

And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong,

Just remember, in the winter, far beneath the bitter snows,

Lies a seed, that with the sun's love, in the spring, becomes the rose.
