Chapter 4

Remy pulled up to the house after being admitted through the gates. It sure as hell beat climbing over them.

"I'll be down in a second." yelled Skye as she grabbed her purse. She bounded down the steps to meet him. "Mrs. Thompson, I don' know when I'll be home, k?"

"D'accord, I won' make supper." she said, as she shoved then both out of the house.

"Y' t'ink dat she wanted t'get rid of y'?" laughed Remy softly. Skye stiffened and blushed all the way up to her neck.

"De day awaits!" said Remy opening the jag's door. She entered and sat down hesitantly.

"It won't bite." chuckles Remy. She visibly relaxed at his tension breaker.

"It won't, but y' might." she said honestly.

"I'll never hurt y' chere. I'll never leave y' hanging. I promise." he said seriously, looking at her solemnly.

"Where we goin'?" she asked once they started driving into the city.

"I'm takin' y' on a picnic first." he said smiling. "Tante Mattie made lots o' good t'ings!"

Without even thinking, Skye reached over and gave his bare hand a squeeze. She wasn't wearing gloves.

With a yelp, Remy almost drove off the road in surprise. In a couple of seconds and of people honking their horns, he regained control of the car. "Damn dose birds! Dey always be flyin' into MY windshield! Sorry

chere. I was lost in my t'oughts an' y' startled me."

"Yes, it was my fault. I'm sorry too." said Skye quickly. The rest of

the car ride was done in silence while listening to the radio.

About ten minutes had passed when Remy finally pulled to a stop. The place was beautiful, quiet and serene. There was a little creek and a bridge going to the other side. Not to mention a large willow tree leaned towards the creek, giving shade, grass on the ground and a worn path. It was breath taking. Skye gasped as she put a hand to her chest.

"Do y' like it?" he asked uncertainly.

"Like it? I love it!" she clapped her hands in delight.

"Vraiment? I didn't know if y'd like it." he admitted with a smile grabbing the picnic basket. "It used to be a place where I came to t'ink an' play." They traversed the bridge. T'ank God she don' know dat dis is de place dat I took Bella's virginity!

Skye settled herself underneath comfortably. The tree was swaying in the wind and the water in the creek was rushing past. Is this want she wanted? Did she want Remy? Yes. But, did he want her? Probably not after

what she did. Should she take the chance?

Skye didn't get to answer her last question. Remy was holding out a plate of food. Fried chicken, potato salad and fresh bread with butter graced the plate.

"T'ank y'." she smiled.

"Don' t'ank me yet." grinned Remy. Reaching back, he grabbed two glasses and a bottle of champagne from the picnic basket. It was an old vintage, Skye noted. Remy handed her the glass. Taking a sip, she savored the

taste. It was exquisite!

"Where'd y' get dis? It's fantastic!" remarked Skye.

Remy gave a chuckle. He always seemed to have a smile on. "Don' know. I'd guess France, dough." He started to eat the chicken. "So, 'ave any siblings?"

"Non." she replied softly. "My parents weren't together long enough. Dey divorced an' my maman gave me up f'dead, when she dies herself." she said as if it were a rehearsed speech. But it cut deeper into her than she realized. She had just told Remy about her real past.

"I'm sorry." he said softly. "If it makes y' feel any better, I don' remember my real parents." Skye stared at him.

"Y' don't remember y' parents?" she asked with wide eyes. "Well, don' feel bad. I didn' either until recently."

They both let the subject drop. Before Skye knew it, she had eaten everything on her plate while talking. Wow, time sure did pass quickly when y' are having fun! His eyes twinkled as he pulled out chocolate covered strawberries for desert.

"Now chere, y'll have t'let me do de honors." he grinned. Pushing up close to Skye, he softly laid her down, with the tree as a prop up. "Close y' eyes an' open y' mouth."

Not stopping to wonder if this was a bad idea, she complied. Remy took the strawberry and slowly slipped it into her mouth, his fingers brushing against her lips.

"Hmm, I love strawberries." she said as she chewed. Slowly opening her eyes, she saw a vision. A vision of manliness. He was sitting over top of her... looking down.

She brought herself closer to his face. As she came closer, she closed her eyes. As if a wish had been fulfilled, she kissed him.

They broke apart after a minute. "Y' know chere, y' taste like strawberries." grinned Remy, positively glowing.

"Y' just fed me one." teased Skye.

"Y' also look like one." he chuckled. Her flushed face was joined with red embarrassment. "Oui my little strawberry, dis is just de beginning." It wasn't hard to mistake the certainty in his voice.

"What do y' mean?" she stammered.

"De day is not finished yet!" he said jumping up with a wild spontaneous gesture. "Ever been t' de carnival?"

"I would have t' say no." admitted Skye. A twinkle appeared in his eye.

"Let me show y' my world, wit' no secrets." he said taking her hand and leading her back to the car.

"What about de picnic basket?" asked Skye. He looked at her with a confused expression. Then it dawned on him. This time it was his turn to blush. Going back, he picked up the basket. He stopped in front of Skye

and held out his arm. "Shall we go?"

"Let's." smiled Skye as they made their way to the car.

It was a beautiful scenic drive back into the city. She was sad to see it go, but sadness changed to wonder as they came into view of the big top.

Roads were blocked off, to make sure that cars would not pass through into the carnival area. Police monitored the barricades. But when Remy pulled up, a smile to the guard was enough to allow them passage. Driving through the backway, he parked behind the big top. "How did y'get through?" asked Skye curiously.

"I know people here," said Remy. "In fact, I was asked to perform here."

"Vraiment?" asked Skye with an eyebrow raised.

He gave a chuckle. "Oui, vraiment." He seemed to be smiling more of late.

"What are y' goin' t'do?" asked Skye curiously.

"Y'll see." was his reply. They walked into the big top where the crowds were starting to form.

"Where's Remy? Where's Remy?" shouted a frantic little man. People were muttering that they hadn't seen him.

"Pierre, je suis ici." said Remy loud enough for everyone to hear. The little man spun around and ran towards him with wide eyes.

"Where've y' been? I've been looking everywhere!" gasped the little man. "Y' on in 10 minutes! Is dis de girl dat y' goin' t'use?"

"Oui." smiled Remy.

"What?" demanded Skye.

"Okay, get ready an' quick." The little man now having said his piece, ran off to find other people.

"Use me?" asked Skye uncertainly.

"I need y' f' my act." grinned Remy. "Dis is not a normal crowd."

"What do y' mean?"

"Dis is a crowd made up of T'ieves Guild members." smiled Remy.

She his her reaction. "What's de T'ieves Guild? Attend une minute... dat's why Uncle Marc told me t'go to y'. It makes sense... Did y' steal y grandmanan's necklace?" suspicion filled her voice and eyes. Remy knew it all too well. He would not be daunted.

"Non, we didn't steal it, chere. But, we gonna find it." he said determined. He took a deep breath. He was going to get it all out. Or as much as he could in ten minutes and counting. "Chere, dis Guild had rules. We can' harm innocents, an' we can' steal stuff dat belongs to de people. It had t'be stolen first. Children are always safe... We are not bad people. We 'ave jobs like everyone else..."

"You're on Remy." yelled a voice. Remy grinned at her as he took her arm and led her into the big top.

"Now ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, please rise for y' national anthem." said the announcer.

Remy pulled Skye up to the microphone.

He began to sin. Skye couldn't do anything but join him, or risk offending people or fainting dead away. "Oh say can you see, through dawn's early light that so proudly we hail...... the home of the free and the home of the brave." The crowd went wild throwing their caps into the air as fire works were shot off.

Remy went over to the announcer. "T'anks Geoff." he said taking over the microphone. "Y' people ready t' rumble?" The crows cheered even louder. "Dis is de first time we've 'ad a carnival come in f' us. It was a favor

dat de owner owed me." Remy exaggerated a big wink. Everyone knew what he mean, except Skye. Although, now, she had a good idea. The crowd laughed and clapped. "Sit back an' enjoy de show. May I present my

helper f' t'day, Skye Devreaux." A thunder of clapping arose. She gave a weak smile. What the hell was the man doing??? She was sure that some people in the crowd were wondering just what type of helper she was.

"May I present Miranda de Marvelous an' back to y' Geoff." smiled Remy giving back the microphone for the rest of the night. They went off to take seats on the ringside that was designated for them.

"Allo papa." smiled Remy as they got into the box.

"Bonjour Remy, Skye. Good job. Y'sound good together." beamed Jean-Luc.

"T'anks." said Skye dryly. "He pulled me up dere wit'out even telling me what we were going t' do."

Jean-Luc stared up at Remy wide eyed. A tick started at the corner of his mouth which formed into a smile and before he knew it, a gale of laughter.

"What?" asked Remy frowning very confused like.

"Not'ing." sighed Jean-Luc wiping laughter tears from his eyes. "Let's watch de show.

Skye was already entranced with Miranda's high flying action. She was a tightrope walker.

Jean-Luc didn't lose the smile...

"Where we goin'?" asked Christenne, blindfolded. Jean-Luc held her hands as he led her.

"Just wait. We almost dere." grinned Jean-Luc. After a few more cobble stones they stopped. "Okay, y' can look now."

Slowly she drew off the blindfold. "Mon Dieu! Dere's actually a waterfall close to N'awlins!?" She didn't see him reach behind himself to fetch something out of his pocket.

"Chere," he said quietly. She spun around with love in her eyes.

He pulled out the ring from behind him. "Will y' marry me?"

"Her eyes went wide. "Yes, I love y' Jean-Luc."

"I love y' too." he said as he took her mouth and pressed on a gentle kiss. "Dis is just de beginning."

"We've been together f' two weeks Jean-Luc an' I don't know y' last name yet." she smiled, "Or even met y' family."

"Love, I'll take y' t'see my family later. Right now, only you're important." he sighed pulling her into the water...........

A thunderous applause from the people beside him signified the end of the act.

"What did y' t'ink papa?" asked Remy.

"C'etait bon!" said Jean-Luc winging it, because he hadn't caught a thing. He was glad that Remy didn't push.

"How 'bout y' chere?" asked Remy.

"It was wonderful!" Skye said in a rush. "All does flips.. it was encroyable!"

Remy gave a chuckle, "Dat it was, dat is was."

They watched the end of the show and a dread filled Skye's belly when Geoff had turned back to Remy.

"Ladies and gentlemen. We have hoped dat y' have enjoyed de show. But before y' go, your very own Prince of T'ieves has been asked to perform a trick. Come on up Remy."

With a twinkle in his eye, he grabbed Skye. "Dis is what I needed y' for."

He brought her into the ring. "Remy I'm goin' t' get y' for dis." hissed Skye, sounding like Bella. He only smiled at her.

"I can' imagine what y' want me t'do?" she sighed.

"Just stand dere." he smiled. Skye looked down and saw different kinds of powders on the ground. She swallowed a gulp. Remy nodded to the music person and a mysterious techno type music started. "Don't move chere."

With the dramatic hand gestures, his hands started to glow with light. The ball engulfed his hands. The crowd sat in suspense and awe.

A shot, a beam of light shot from his hands and ignite the powder around Skye. A brilliant show of fireworks sparked around her, totally blinding Skye to everything around her.

It felt like a sudden lurch, then she was falling. She was falling from the top towards the ground.

"I won't fly. I won't fly." she said to herself with determination as she fell towards the ground. But, she did let out a scream.

She saw the heads of the crows turn upwards as gasp. How did she get up there?

Remy positioned himself under her and caught her before she hit the ground. She looked into his eyes and fainted.

The crowd went wild with cheering and a thunderous applause rocked the bleachers.

"Skye wake up." pleaded Remy flicking water onto her face.

"Sorry." she grumbled opening up her eyes. "I really shouldn't make a habit out of dat."

"What? Flying?" teased Remy.

"No, fainting." she groaned finally realizing that they weren't alone. Sitting up, she turned towards the worried eyes of Jean-Luc.

"Y' okay petite?' he asked concerned.

"I'm fine." she said softly. "But can y' help me off dis table?"

They both jumped to attention. Carefully taking her hands, they helped her stand.

"Next time y' be doin' somet'ing like dat... let's just say y' better tell me first." muttered Skye with a mischievous smile, getting up to leave.

"Wait chere. My day is not finished yet!" grinned Remy. Jean-Luc smiled and left to join the festivities.

"Oh?" replied Skye.

"We still 'ave de rest o' de carnival!" he grinned going out of the tent they were in. Skye followed him outside. She hadn't noticed the excitement that buzzed around her when she first walked in, but now it

was addictive.

"Well... okay." she conceded with a slight smile as they went off to explore the carnival.

"Lapin, wait up!" yelled Christoph. Lapin stopped beside a lamp post and waited.

"How's Remy doin'?" asked Lapin.

Christoph pulled him away from the crowd. "He's gettin' under her skin. At dis rate, we'll 'ave her secret before de Assassins."

Lapin smiled, "Yes, we will. It's just our luck dat dis girl didn't grow up here. She 'as no loyalties t'anyone or reason t'mistrust us any."

"Once Remy has her buttered up. I just t'ought of something." frowned Christoph.

"Quoi?"

"What if Remy likes her like he seems t'. What if it's not all just an act?"

Lapin looked at him as if her were crazy. "Christoph, his last lady love, left him t'die. It may o' been a couple o' years since... but he's sworn off love forever. He told me so."

"But..."

"No buts... he is not falling in love wit' de woman. He is just using her. Is dat clear?"

"Very." mumbled Christoph as they both went there separate ways.

Remy helped Skye onto the ride. "I've never been on a ferrous wheel before." breathed Skye as the attendant locked the safety gate and began the ride.

"It' so beautiful up here." she sighed. "Y' can see de whole carnival an' parts of de French Quarter."

"Yeah, y' are beautiful." smiled Remy.

She didn't blush. That was the person of the past. "I bet y' say dat t'all de girls." teased Skye. He didn't reply, he just kept on smiling.

"Eh, Remy!" shouted someone below them in the next seat.

"Bonjour Tante!" yelled Remy leaning over the edge.

"I didn't t'ink dat y' would ever go out wit' a girl again. Good for y' boy, gettin' over y' fear!" yelled Tante.

"Fears 'bout dating?" inquired Skye.

"I was really hurt Skye. De break up wasn't pretty an' dats enough of dat. I still wanna win y' a teddy bear." smiled Remy. The ride attendant stopped the ride after a hand signal from Remy. "Wait here chere. I'll

be right back."

She nodded. First, a picnic, den a carnival. Wow, dis day sure as' gone well.

Remy came back holding two chocolate ice cream cones. "Here chere. Now I can go win y' dat teddy bear."

"Step right up and test y' accuracy. Pick out which diamonds are real. Step right up." yelled a man at a booth.

Definitely a thieves carnival. Thought Skye as Remy motioned her towards the booth. The man's jaw dropped as Remy stepped up.

"Y' do get teddy bears as a prize, non?" asked Remy.

"Oui." the man stammered, giving him a pouch of gems. Remy carelessly tossed them onto the table. Within seconds, they were separated into two groups. The man looked over his work.

"Excellent job. No one could of done better." the man gave him a little smile. Reaching under the table the guy handed them a Gund teddy bear.

Remy took it with a smile. "Merci beaucoup." he told the man. "Here y' go Skye. A teddy bear from me to y'."

"It's cute." smiled Skye as she took it and cuddled it. "I'll call it Cuddles. But I'd better be gettin' home, tomorrow's goin' t'be a busy night."

Remy jumped to attention and escorted her back to his car.

It was a quiet drive noted Skye as they approached her front door.

"I had a fun time." admitted Skye looking towards the ground.

Remy gently took her chin and looked directly into her eyes. "Chere, I'd like t'do it again." he whispered softly.

"Sure, I'd love t'go out..." started Skye. Before she knew it, his lips were gently teasing hers. The kiss ended softly.

"I'd be honored if y' will let me be y' date tomorrow for de ball." he said.

Something in her screamed that that was a total lie. But she was too engrossed in the moment to care. "I accept."

"I'll pick y' up around 6:30 den." he said with a fake smile.

"Okay." she whispered. Was he mad at her? Did he not like their kiss? What had she done wrong? Remy jumped into his car and drove off down the stretch of road that exited her property.

As she went into the house and climbed into bed, she wondered just how tomorrow would go.
