When the Witness tries indirectly to save the X-Men, he sets in chain a series of events that lead to the truth being revealed, but also to tragedy.

Chapter 1 Bishop crouched in the late night shadows, scanning the lakefront before him...

Chapter 2 Remy LeBeau ignored his reflection as he tossed items onto the bureau. Watch, lighter, pocket change...

Chapter 3 Morning came far too early, at least as far as Remy was concerned...

Chapter 4 "This code is quite amazing." Hank McCoy watched the translation process over Gambit's shoulder...

Chapter 5 After absorbing much of Remy's knowledge of his guild's code...

Chapter 6 Rain dripped from the edge of the rusted scrap metal that served Bishop as a roof...

Chapter 7 Bishop came back to himself with a start. Gambit leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed...

Chapter 8 "Congratulations," the Witness said into the stunned silence. "I'm impressed...

Chapter 9 Bishop ran the cloth over the gun barrel without really being aware of it...

Chapter 10 Charles Xavier was completely exasperated...

Chapter 11 Rain sheeted down outside the high windows that lined Professor Xavier's study...

Chapter 12 The man stands before the fireplace, contemplating the flames. He is dressed elegantly in black and navy...

Chapter 13 Charles Xavier woke with a start. He had been dozing, chin propped in hand. Rogue glanced up at him...

Chapter 14 Jean gave his hand an encouraging squeeze. Charles returned it as they waited for the disorientation to pass...

Chapter 15 "How literal is this representation?" Jean continued to stroke the child Remy...

Chapter 16 Charles held on to Jean's arm as they walked quickly away from the dead boy lying on the street...

Chapter 17 Rogue leaned her elbows on the edge of the sink, staring out the window...

Chapter 18 Remy was sitting up in bed, talking with Storm, when Charles entered the room...

Chapter 19 The door slid aside, the customary whisper sounding inordinately loud to Rogue's ears...

Chapter 20 For the first time in a very long time, Remy LeBeau was almost content...

Chapter 21 Charles Xavier studied the chess board before him with interest...

Chapter 22 Remy raised his bo staff a little higher and spun it 180 degrees, then back, each movement fluid...

Chapter 23 *Remy, what're y' doin'?* he asked himself as he stared at the computer screen...

Chapter 24 Remy looked around the lab, momentarily out of things to do...

Chapter 25 Dust sifted down onto Rogue's face as she jostled the pile of boxes and she sneezed violently...

Chapter 26 Charles looked up at the polite knock on his study door...

Chapter 27 Remy sipped his beer and waited...

Chapter 28 "Dat enough, Jean?" Remy eyed the mound of grated cheese before him...

Chapter 29 Bishop settled himself on the remains of a fallen tree and stared at the tranquil water before him...

Chapter 30 Remy stood in the darkness, watching Rogue sleep...

Chapter 31 "So what's up, Chuck?" Wolverine asked as he entered the room...

Chapter 32 Charles gritted his teeth against the normal disorientation of entering another mind...

Chapter 33 "They've been in there a long time...

Chapter 34 Emma Frost slid from her chair with a cry of pain...

Chapter 35 The man disciplines himself to silence as the face appears before him...

Chapter 36 Remy LeBeau stared at his reflection in the bathroom mirror...

Chapter 37 "You low-down, slimy...

Chapter 38 Rogue woke to the sound of voices-- a man and a woman, with the continuous piping of children mixed in...

Chapter 39 Scott rolled the dice and moved his piece forward six places, landing on St. James Place. He groaned...

Chapter 40 Scott had to resort to using Cerebro to find Bishop...

Chapter 41 "Bishop is just full of surprises, isn't he?" Jean rested chin on hand and watched Bobby across the table...

Chapter 42 Rogue stood uncertainly in the doorway to the mansion's rec room...

Chapter 43 Charles felt his stomach tighten at the knock on his study door...

Chapter 44 "Rogue said that you left the day before the X-men were killed...

Chapter 45 Warren Worthington rested one hand lightly on the danger room controls, debating whether to adjust them...

Chapter 46 Bishop sat in the continuous drizzle and contemplated the ants that trekked industriously past the toe of...

Chapter 47 Ororo Munroe heard the knock on her loft door, but didn't turn around...
