Chapter 1

I think I used to have a purpose. Then again, that might have been a dream.

Death sat in a chair in the break area of Sinister’s current laboratory. No one had given him a task and he felt no desire to do anything. He never felt much of anything anymore. He didn’t react when Sunfire entered the small room, but he noticed. It just didn’t mean anything.

"Have you eaten today?" Sunfire was looking pointedly at the bare table.

"No. I no longer notice hunger, but I’ll eat what I need to keep going."

"Eat something now."

Listlessly, he rose and put together a sandwich on a paper towel. Eating was a mechanical process, all his senses had been muted by the transformation.

"Satisfied?"

Sunfire frowned. "You should really take better care of yourself. Such lack of direction concerns me."

Death rose without replying and left the room. Sunfire’s frown became slightly puzzled as he again scanned the table. The paper towel was gone.

***

I just do what I’ve been told.

"May I speak with you?"

Sinister glanced up from the experimental data he was reviewing. "Is something troubling you, Sunfire? Not second thoughts I trust."

"Death’s behavior is disconcerting."

Sinister made a face at the name. He couldn’t understand why Remy insisted on using it. "How so?"

"Most of the time he is like a puppet, one whose hand has lost interest. I grow weary of trying to provide guidance because I know his actions mean nothing to him, he merely goes through the motions. Then sometimes, for a few moments, he has resolve and emotion. He does not seem to recall such episodes very well. I fear his mind is broken."

"It’s possible. Tell me, does anything seem to trigger these emotional episodes?"

Sunfire shrugged. "Nothing specific."

"Then we must continue to keep a close eye on him, mustn’t we?"

***

I can feel their eyes are watching, in case I lose myself again.

Death stood of to the side of a lab station, empty eyes watching a scientist bustle about.

"Do you need something?" The man seemed annoyed by his audience. Death responded with a shake of the head. The scientist scrawled something on a clipboard and did his best to ignore his visitor.

Death glanced up to a mirrored panel he knew to be an observation room, then silently slipped out the door.

The scientist went to write down some findings and blinked. "What happened to my pen?"

***

I’m writing on a little piece of paper. I’m hoping someday you might find it. Well, I’ll hide it behind something they won’t look behind.

Sinister stepped quietly into the room Remy had been using. He lifted up the edge of the cot mattress and found a napkin. It read:

’Joined Apocalypse b/c thought best. Knew there was no going back. Did it anyway.’

The hand was shaky and sloppy, almost as though the author had written it without looking. Between the dresser and the wall was a Post-It note.

’Loved Rogue. Had to drive her away.’

Under a loose floor-board were a paper towel and a few pens.

’Had no place to go. Sinister made offer. Couldn’t think of way out.’

Sinister put everything back exactly as he had found it. It was always best to tread lightly around Remy. It would be better if he said nothing. He would just have to watch the boy closely.

I am still inside here. A little bit comes bleeding through...
